A youthful Wanderers team was held to a goalless draw at Aggborough on Saturday afternoon.

Of the first team, only defenders Darren Ward, Jason Shackell and Neil Collins started the match, with fringe and youth players given the chance to impress. Two trialists were also on show, with former Derby youth striker Paris Simmons and young Dutch winger Perez.

It was the home side who got the first chances of the contest thanks to Darryl Knights, who first tried a 25 yard volley then sent a shot wide.

The young Wolves attempted a fightback through Ashley Hemmings. He took on Kyle Bennett’s pass and was wide of the mark, though on 24 minutes he forced a save from home keeper Dean Coleman.

Away custodian Richard Wooley was then tested as Gavin Strachan blasted a free kick at him from 22 yards, followed by two chances inside a minute for Elliott Bennett at the other end of the field.

And to end the half Knights was at it again as he tried to find a way past Wooley, though half time arrived with the match goalless.

It proved to be a short outing for half-time sub Sam Winnall, on for Perez. He was hurt in a collision and subsequently himself replaced.

This galvanised his team, with Kyle Bennett creating a chance for Coleman to save before Dean Bennett narrowly missed out on giving Harriers the lead. Wooley was left stranded as the ball hit the crossbar.

Indeed for the final 25 minutes the home side dominated- sub Zac Costello forcing Wooley into the first of a series of saves as his team rode out the match, with coach Steve Weaver admitting that the Wolves performance had been below his expectations.
