Music Portsmouth have run out to

Hello everyone,

I hope this is okay to post here – if not, moderators please move or delete as appropriate.

I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris
Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine
articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and
replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255).

Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have
run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years.

We are looking for the music that Portsmouth have run out to for as
many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in
the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons
Portsmouth ran out to this. Any help you can give us to
piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would
be hugely appreciated.

If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs
being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic.

I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song
that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the
tannoy system as the players enter the field.

If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any
questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the
project.

Thanks for your time,

Joe Headland

Hi Joe

Just had a look at your
www. sportingstatues.com website.

I am very, very disappointed as I am sure that a lot of the posters on this board are that you don't show the original Ted Bates statue.

Rest assured it was a classic one [:D]

I am sure that someone on here can post you a link to it so you can include it on your site.

Thanks

I have a feeling of foreboding about this thread. Some of our posters may not approach this academic project with the seriousness it deserves [:D]

We had Wheel of Fortune by Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Carribbean) for a while, 2009-2010 ish.

There was also a period of time where the only CD we had was Crazy Chick by Charlotte Church, every half time for about 5 years!

The speed up Mike Oldfield version by Mike Oldfield has been used since the FA Cup semi final with West Brom in 2008. I used to sit next to the Mum and Dad of the lad in the press department that had organised the speeded up version.

I know their was a short period, much to many complaints from the fans, when Robbie William's Let Me Entertain You was used.

From memory there was a short period of time, and I think it was when Venables was running the show that there was some form of electronic keyboard version of 'Portsmouth'. I don't know the name of the artist, but it was almost certainly the worst ever song that has introduced the team.

To be pedantic we do not actually run out to Mike Oldfield. It is played after the players have arrived on the pitch, after strolling out on to the pitch to something else.

Don’t get me started again evidence of tin pot .

Mike Oldfield Portsmouth was fine until they jazzed it up ner ner style .

Do Everton need to jazz up “Z cars” or Palace modernise “Glad all over “
No and their fans wouldn’t want it , we get spoon fed durge , by clowns on ego trips with little or no Imagination or understanding of the average fan.

Who remembers the ponytailed MC he got it bang on the money plus he had a sense of humour with his post match choices, on his watch
Pompey came out to “City with a heart” going into Portsmouth ( pre ner ner bang bang version)

Rant over

In the 70s the only song they ever played at half time was “I love to love “ by Tina Charles , always brings back that time when I hear it now....

Thank you to everyone for sharing your memories and views - it's much appreciated.

A second questions.. what's the earliest time any of you can remember Portsmouth (in it's original version) being played?

And forgive us.. Chris is now aware of some important statue database related updates that must occur!

We didn't adopt it until well after it was released in the Seventies. I would say the earliest we used it would have been the late 80s.
I think some fans tried to get it to Number One for the Cup Final, I don't think that suceeded but they faced competition from other Pompey Cup Final songs including one by legendary Pompey fan folk song-writer Arnold Gutbucket. Like a lot of his songs, it was a bit tongue in cheek. It contained the verse "Pompey, Pompey, Pompey are the team for me" and was adopted on match days leading into Mike Oldfield's song.
My favourite Cup Final song was "'Urry up 'arry" from Sham 69's 70's version. A nice hark-back to when we sung 'Portsmouth Boys' to the tune of Jimmy Pursey and co's Hersham Boys back in the 70's - a song that could have been written for us then..."lace up boots and courduroys."

A picture in there that evokes emotion like no other. The couple gazing up with admiration and love. All the while thinking "something isn't quite right but we really dont want to say"
