Pompey's latest two recruits spoke of their disappointment at a losing start to their Fratton careers against Doncaster - but agreed there'd be better results ahead if the team continued to believe in themselves.

Paul Benson and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing couldn't help the Blues to any reward on their debuts but both showed promise - especially Mendez-Laing - and they will get another chance to lift the squad to success when Leyton Orient visit Fratton on Tuesday night.

Benson told the club website after Rovers' 1-0 win: It was disappointing. When you put as much effort in as we did then it’s gutting to come away with nothing. If we keep putting in a shift like that then we’ll win more games than we’ll lose. We just need to add a bit of quality.

'We chucked enough balls into the box to get something out of the game and I need to make sure I get on the end of more of those crosses. I felt a little bit off, but that was my first 90 minutes of the season so it’s to be expected. Hopefully I can get into things as quickly as possible and help the side push up the table.

'I’ve only had one game here, but it’s clear that the fans are behind all of the boys. That’s something we want to repay. We’ve got two great guys and two real Pompey men who are leading things, so we just need to stick at it.'

Mendez-Laing told the website: 'It was really annoying not to get three points and I think we deserved better than a defeat. I thought that I did well on my debut, but that’s not important if we fail to pick up points. It was a disappointing afternoon.

'We were able to create quite a few chances throughout the game. They had once chance in the first period and took it. I don’t know how we didn’t managed to pick up a result – it should have been a comfortable victory. But the atmosphere was great and the fans were excellent – they didn’t stop singing and stuck with us throughout.'
