Don Paterson and Josephine Dickinson
7.30pm, Sunday, April 5th
Live Theatre
£7/£5 concs.

Don Paterson was born in Dundee in 1963. A prolific and versatile poet, his work ranges from sonnets to postmodern narratives; from meditations on identity and masculinity to savagely funny satire. Don won an Eric Gregory Award in 1990 and his three collections of poetry – Nil Nil (1993), God’s Gift to Women (1997) and Landing Light (2003) – have won the Forward Prize, the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, the T. S. Eliot Prize and the Whitbread Poetry Award. As well as being poetry editor for Picador, Don is an accomplished jazz guitarist, and works solo and with the jazz-folk ensemble, Lammas. Tonight he will be reading a selection of his poems, as well as new work.

‘It’s a long time since I’ve been knocked sideways by a book of poems, but the life, energy, verbal precision and inventiveness of Don Paterson’s Landing Light kept me awake at night.’
– A.S. Byatt, New Statesman

Josephine Dickinson has been profoundly deaf since the age of six. Despite this, she spent many years teaching music, before moving to rural Cumbria where she now lives. Her poetry presents a rich symbolic world in which mythology meets politics, and domestic imagery meets the forces of the natural world. Josephine is a spellbinding reader of her work. Tonight she will read from her new book, Night Journey (Flambard, 2008), in which she combines her interest in astronomy with her grief after the death of her partner.

‘Josephine Dickinson’s poems are exceptionally original. Hers is a vision edged with mystery and rendered with arresting, occasionally breathtaking craft.’
– Michael Donaghy
