I've never done this before so I'll start at the beginning. My name is Oli and I have just opened a record shop called Ack! Ack! Ack! in Middlesbrough. Robert has kindly asked me to write a "Record Of The Week" type-thing for his site, so I reluctantly accepted, not being much of a writer and that.

For this first attempt, I have decided to write about the best thing I have heard while stocking my shop over the last month, rather than something that has just been released....

ARTIST: White Magic

RELEASE: "New Egypt"

LABEL: Southern Records (Latitude Series)

I'd never heard of White Magic until I saw them supporting Joanna Newsom at The Sage in about 2005. I loved them from the off: a bit strange, a bit different, a bit spooky and VERY repetitive. All the qualities I look for in a band. Ideal. On my way out, I bought their only release, a 12" EP on white vinyl, which I also LOVED and played to death for about 6 weeks. Then it all went quiet.

About 2 years later, I heard they were releasing an album! Exciting! Then I heard it. Ugh. DULL, DULL, DULL! What happened? I still don't know. Anyway, I wrote them off and just stopped checking in to see what they were up to.

Fast forward to 3 weeks ago. It's 11.30pm and I'm pricing stock in my shop for about the fourth night running and rapidly running out of non-shrink-wrapped things to listen to. The only thing left is a 2008 release by, yup, White Magic. It's part of a limited edition series of releases orchestrated by the good folk at Southern Records. They ask bands that are on tour to drop into their London studio and record/mix a release of whatever they want in a very short time frame.

I reluctantly decide to put it on but I'm overjoyed that I did. It's the exact thing I wanted them to do after the first EP! It's creepy, it's full of excellent loops, it's really repetative, it's 10 and a half minutes long, it's brilliant. Really brilliant in fact.

If you value the above qualities in music, or are a fan of Can, Magik Markers or any space-folk, psych or krautrock, you would be daft not to listen to this.

You can listen to it here:

And if you wanna buy it, I have 2 copies left.

Ack!Ack!Ack! Records 178A Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough.
