All of May is the Local and Community History month across the UK!

It’s an opportunity for everyone to look around them and to explore their local history.

There were plans for a programme of talks, discussions and guided tours celebrating the local history of Middlesbrough and for the first time in Stockton on Tees.

However, this has had to be abandoned, due to lock-down and social isolation. But the show must go on!

That’s why we decided to make this year’s Local History Month a ‘Virtual’ one! We thought it made sense to put our heads together and team up across Middlesbrough and Stockton.

A number of local historians, including Martin Peagam, Tony Fox and Tosh Warwick are working with staff from Middlesbrough Events, Stockton on Tees Libraries service, Middlesbrough Libraries, Teesside Archives and both Museum services to offer people the opportunity to discover more about the heritage of the area and to engage actively in discussions about that heritage, sharing memories and information.

Programme

At present the programme starts like this:

Stockton Family History Advice and information - Every Tuesday at 10.00am
An opportunity to learn how to research your ancestors through on-line articles, and to ask questions of library staff.

Stockton Memories Session - Every Wednesday at 2.00pm
An opportunity to share memories about places and events in the town’s history. Each week the library will post photographs from the Picture Stockton Archive, based on a theme, and these can be discussed on-line.

No Place for Terrorists: Teesside and the Women’s Suffrage Movement

Martin F Peagam

An exploration of the campaign for women’s suffrage on Teesside, by men and women, and in particular the rejection of the terrorist activities of the Suffragettes.

This is a Watch Party - where everyone is invited but you need to join the group.

Our Virtual Local and Family History Group is delighted to host a Watch Party with local historian and 'time traveller' Martin Peagam on Wednesday 6 May at 2pm.

To join the group go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/246080663250652

Watch along as Martin explores the ways in which Teesside responded to the fight for the Vote for Women.

If you thought Emmeline Pankhurst was beloved by those seeking equality, and that she believed in democracy - prepare to learn the truth. Afterwards we’ll have a live Q&A where you can post your questions to Martin about this fascinating period of history.

Participation

The programme is open to everyone, whether in isolation in Stockton or Sydney, Middlesbrough or Miami.

All you have to do is visit our facebook pages https://www.facebook.com/Discovermiddlesbrough/
