Communities are being encouraged to join in and create the biggest outdoor street art gallery ever.

Redcar and Cleveland and Middlesbrough Councils have joined forces to deliver positive cultural activity to local communities throughout the covid lockdown.

One of the first projects the partnership is launching is a huge community art project building on the nationwide popularity of the window rainbows.

windowEvery two weeks people across the south of the Tees region will be given a new theme and encouraged to decorate their windows using materials already in the home and a little imagination.

The first will be on Friday, May 8 to coincide with VE Day with the aim of creating stay at home street parties to mark the 75th anniversary.

In the run up some of the area's best artists will be posting tips, ideas and lessons to inspire the public's artworks.

Deputy Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Cllr Karen King said: "I would encourage as many of our residents across the South Tees, both young and old, to get involved and create the biggest outdoor street art, building on the huge popularity of the windows rainbows.

"The 75th anniversary of VE Day takes place next Friday, May 8, and whilst we can't come together to mark the occasion, we can create our own unique window displays and decorations to show our respects."

Cllr Mieka Smiles, Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Culture and Communities, said: "All of us are looking for things to do to keep our heads and hands busy and it would be great to make this creative project a thing everyone can get involved in and enjoy the challenge.
