Middlesbrough’s first ever Transgender Day of Remembrance takes place in the Town Hall later this week.

The candle-lit vigil will be held in the Mandela Room on Thursday (November 20) between 6pm and 7pm, while the Town Hall will fly the Transgender flag.

The names of those Trans* people who have lost their lives in the last year will be read out, giving friends and family a chance to share memories and offer one another support.

The TDoR is being organised in association with LGBT Middlesbrough by Ellie Lowther, Chair of Hart Gables Domestic Violence and Abuse Service and Vice Chair of the Cleveland Transgender Association.

The CTA is a network providing support, information and advice as well as seeking to break down some of the false perceptions of what it is to be Transgendered.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was first held in 1998 and is now observed annually on November 20 in more than 20 countries and 185 cities around the world.

Ellie Lowther said: “The TDoR is important, both to remember those who have passed and to send out a clear message around the world that targeting Trans* people and making their lives a misery must stop.

“It is a sad but special day for people who identify as Trans*, their allies, family and friends to get together and support each other.

“On Thursday we will remember those who have been killed or have taken their own lives due to abuse and hatred, as well as those who are simply unhappy and scared to speak out.”

Middlesbrough Deputy Mayor Councillor Dave Budd, who will represent the Council at Thursday’s event, said: “We are pleased to be able to support the Day of Remembrance and look forward to doing so in future years.

“It’s an important opportunity to raise awareness, remember those who have died or been persecuted and spread the message that everyone has the right to live their life free from fear.”

Meet beforehand from 5pm when changing facilities and refreshments will be available at the Hart Gables Middlesbrough office on Floor 9 of Centre North East.
