I have just finished reading the latest edition of FourFourTwo, a worldwide monthly football magazine, and I thought I would pick up on one page in particular.
This page lists the top 30 clubs in Europe, as ranked by average attendance. Newcastle are 65 people behind FC Koln and are in 14th place. Not bad considering the results were taken one season after our brief spell in the Championship.
We didn't go unnoticed by FFT, and the sub heading that was given was, 'NEWCASTLE: BEST FANS?'. Pride overwhelmed me, but is this statement true?
After doing a bit of research I realised that there was a huger demand for top flight football, rather than second-tier football. Could we have had such a huge turnout week in week out because of promotion? I looked at recently promoted sides like Kaiserslauten and Nurnberg, and found out a shocking stat; it was that all three clubs (including Newcastle) had gained their highest average attendance following promotion for ten years, more for two of the clubs!
The Championship might seem a distant nightmare now, but was it the key to a successful campaign last year? Yes. Let's just hope we can back it up with an even better season this time round, maybe a decent cup run?
We have brilliant turnouts week in week out, the atmosphere might have dropped but, atleast we get the numbers in. We love our club, more than any supporters love theirs.
Are we the best supporters in the world?
