Derby day is almost upon us and for me, despite last year’s embarrassment of the unwashed and comfortable away draw, the nerves are there like never before.   Although it is very early in the campaign I feel this match could already make or break our season.  There appears to be an awful lot of unrest amongst fans and a negative result against our most bitter rivals could send this unrest into overdrive.

The current state of affairs surrounding the sales of key players, the treatment of those key players and the clubs apparent lack of effort to replace these players is getting under everybody’s skin.  The lack of communication between the club and its fans is just adding fuel to the fire.

On the other hand a positive result against the scum could turn things dramatically.  Such is the meaning of the fixture.  Fans and pundits alike are yet to be convinced about the players that have come in and the direction of the club.  A good win on Saturday could go a long way to showing people that maybe things are being done correctly.  As far as the football side of things go.  Just remember, no matter how bad our situation becomes.  It could have been worse.  You could have been born a mackem.

I am quietly confident we can get a result.  I have nerves like never before due to the importance of the match but believe that we have every chance of turning this lot over.  I hate to admit that I have been impressed with the players that they have brought in but feel that they have one huge weakness.  Steve Bruce.  From what I can tell he just cannot motivate his side into performing in the way that on paper they look capable of.  Both sides are strong in the middle of the park, capable at the back and seriously struggling for numbers in attack.

I’d like to think that for this one we would push Joey into the middle with Mr Tiote and really over power whatever the mackems can muster in midfield.  Mackem slayer Shola always does a job against this lot and if Joey, our most important player for Saturday, is on form there is no reason why we can’t stick it to them.  It will be a big day for Tim Krul also.  Seemingly given the number one spot he can make steps towards cementing that place on Saturday.  My main concerns are in the obvious areas.  Our complete lack of a left back is there for all to see and I worry that if Larsson gets a grip on the game he could cause us a lot of problems.  We also lack any partner for Shola.  Being our main man against the mackems Shola has to play.  Most likely as a lone front man for this one.  I also hope to see a bit of Dan Gosling on Saturday.  He is a player I have been waiting to see for a long time and I believe he could become a big name in black and white. Goals and flair in abundance.

Saturday is a massive day for all involved.  Most importantly we have to see our players play with pride.  They have to be proud of and understand what the black and white shirt means.  They have to battle like never before and really stick it to this horrible lot in their own back yard.  Keep hitting them hard but keep your head.  Prove to us all that you care.  We have lost some big, passionate players in weeks gone by.  Players who were key to the battering we served this lot last season and players who will always be in our hearts because of this.  Go out there and really make a name for yourself.

It’s a massive game, we need a massive performance.
