Nothing ever shocks me at St James Park. As I get ever closer to 40 I tend to look back a lot at what I have witnessed at the club I chose to support as a boy and there have been plenty of ups and downs and plenty of shocks and revelations. It’s like being in a relationship with somebody you can’t trust and inevitably every now and then you get hurt. It’s your choice whether you stay with them but inevitably you do. The Chris Hughton saga pissed me off. Not just because it meant that Issue 3 was horribly out of date but because having met him on numerous occasions I knew that he was the right man for the job. He turned the club around and restored the dignity of players and fans alike and had us playing attractive football and competing with the big boys again. I know some people are saying that for every Aston Villa there was a Bolton and that we had to look for more experience but that argument falls flat on its face when you see Alan Pardew patrolling the technical area now. I’ve nothing against Alan but the stories of him allegedly hanging around casinos with Mike Ashley and Co. don’t do him any favours. Still the players seem to have this siege mentality which means they simply ignore whatever goes on around them and they just concentrate on doing their job and all credit to them for that. Special credit has to go to the likes of Nolan, Barton,  and Harper who are all born leaders and have been there done it and got the t-shirt. They are leading by example and it is that kind of effort and commitment that will see us hit the 40 point mark long before May.

As a Newcastle United Fan you can have a tendency to get too carried away when we string a few results together and start dreaming of European nights, but with age comes realism and I’m still dreaming of finishing 17th and taking 6 points of our neighbours next year instead of 4. The trip to the Stadium Of Light once again was like a military operation. Starting at Aspers at 8am and winding down to Central to dive on the train with our band of brothers. A bit of banter with the makems as we arrived and then snaking your way to the ground through streets akin to Belfast in the bad old days with a steel ring fence separating us from the scum. Thousands spent outside of the ground to split warring factions then inside the ground on 94 minutes they grab a fluky equalizer and the inbreds are on the pitch and hurling bottles coins and there own faded pink chairs. The stewards once again like chocolate fireguards and not nearly enough Police to cope with two warring factions wanting a piece of each other. The FA should take a serious look at these idiots In Sunderland and make an example of that tit from Spenymoor who chose to assault Steve Harper. If this had been Newcastle United fans then the worlds media would want us shipped out to a US penal institution and wearing an all in one orange number, but hey it’s the makems and they only get out once a year to try and mock their superior rivals so that’s ok.

As I write this there is a week to go in the transfer window and we have signed Ben Arfa who is still on the injury list. The players are dropping like flies, Smith is out for the season, Carroll till April, Gosling has had a setback, Steven Taylor still carrying a knock and Ryan Taylor is like a distant memory, yet Mike Ashley has still to allow Alan Pardew to make his move. I just hope by the time you read this that we have managed to pull in either Ireland or Wright-Phillips or we may have a nail biting end to the season again.
