FAMOUS FAN : PAUL GASCOIGNE

NAME: PAUL GASCOIGNE

FROM: GATESHEAD

SUPPORTS: NEWCASTLE

Paul Gascoigne is back to his bubbling best and he popped into Toon Talk Towers for a chat with Editor Steve Wraith and Former Team Mate Joe Allon.

Happiest Memory at Newcastle?

There were lots but that FA Youth Cup run was something else. We had a great Youth team and most of them bar a couple made it through to the first team.  We had some great people around us in Jimmy Nelson, Colin Suggett, Joe Harvey and Jackie Milburn and they were always on our case and giving us encouragement. We had a great run to the Final where we played Watford over two legs and me and Joe grabbed a brace each. Jack Charlton was there on the night and he said he was going to treat us to steak and chips. He ended up giving us a tenner each and we ended up at Burger King!

Were you sad to leave your home town club?

Yes of course but you have to remember we were a selling club at the time. Stan Seymour had sold my mate Chris Waddle and then Peter Beardsley followed a year or so later. It was hard to leave the club and even morse so my family. I got a great move to Spurs and Joe to Chelsea and the rest is history.

Your known as a joker. Funniest story from your time at Newcastle?

It has to be the day I booked our new signing Tony Cunningham a course of sunbeds. He didn’t see the funny side.

The Club have adopted a new transfer policy and are looking at bringing players through the ranks. Is this something you agree with?

Yes most definitely. When Joe and I were at the club as apprentices we had to clean the toilets and clean the first team players boots. You had to respect the professional players and that gave you great discipline. We played alongside some of the hardest players in the game such as Billy Whitehurst and Tony Cunningham, hardworking, honest pros. The players now have it too easy. There have been too many foreign players come into the game over the last few years and the younger players make it to Reserve standard and then can’t get into the team . It would be great to see another team like the Class of ’85 come through the ranks and do well.

You were coaching at Newcastle United last year. Did you enjoy that?

I loved it.  I had made a start on my badges and was doing well but then I got a bad knee injury. Once that had cleared up my hip went, so that was another set back . Once I get my hip sorted I want to continue where I left off and get my badges.

What you up to now mate?

I’m working on a lot of things with my new manager. I’m back on the after dinner circuit working alongside Joe and just enjoying life. I love the shows because I love talking football. You can have a bit banter with the fans and they can find out whatever they want to know within reason about what really happened during my career.
