Well it’s certainly been a mixed bag of results so far for our beloved Newcastle United. St James Park which last year was a bastion of invincibility has been breached already by this years Hull, Blackpool and long ball/throw specialists Stoke, with sterner tests to come. Typical Newcastle though sees us go to Wolves and Everton and come away with 4 points and snatch an unlikely 4-3 win at Chelsea in the Carling Cup. There are already people grumbling on the terraces and that pisses me off. We are not a top four side any longer man. Get on with it. Our history shows that we are a middle of the table top flight team and I’ll certainly settle for that come May. I’d also settle for that little shiny pot thing, and if we have manage to beat Arsenal who’s ‘gooner ‘stop us?  The injury to Ben Arfa was horrendous and to be robbed of a player that could have set the Premier League alight is typical of our luck. Tiote has settled well and oozes class. The boys a winner and reminds me of  David McCreery. Perch has flapped a bit at times and is no better or worse than our other options in that position. I’d like to see  Steven Taylor follow in Andy Carrolls’ footsteps and sign on the dotted line and then knock on Hughtons’ door and tell him that he wants the right back slot.  That would be some back four, with either Colo or Campbell partnering the new Glenn Roeder, Williamson. Tim Krul also has his chance to shine with Harps out of contention for at least another two months.

Off the pitch Mike Ashley And Co. have been granted planning permission to put up some new signage with the ‘Sports Direct’ logo on it. The name change has taken place despite everyone being up in arms at the mention of it. So how do you feel? Suicidal? Like you never want to go to the match again? That you want to march from Lands End to John O’ Groats burning effigies of Mike Ashley And Co? No? Thought not. You see It will always be St James Park to us and no name change will ever catch on to us. No amount of feet stamping by badly run fan organisations will get Mike Ashley And Co. to change there mind. It makes us look like spoilt bairns. It’s done now so let’s draw a line under it and support the team because that’s our job.

The first issue of ‘Toon Talk’ was met with approval and we have received some great emails and texts and we thank all three of you, especially my Mam. This issue is a ‘Derby Special’ and I actually have poo pains as I think about 31st October. I know in my heart of hearts though that we are going to hammer the red and white inbreds and send them back to Wearyside with their tales between their bandy white legs. Derby games are won up here by unlikey heros so I’m sticking a tenner on 2-1 to us. Shola to notch a header. Bent to equalise and Ryan Taylor free-kick with the winner. You heard it here first.

Two quick plugs before I finish. VILLAGE VOICE is the story of Percy Main Amateurs 2009/10 season from ‘Toon Talk’ scribbler Ian Cusack and it tells the semi-dramatic story of the Main’s sometimes nerve shredding, sometimes triumphant but always expletive-strewn , ultimately successful attempt to escape from the 11th tier of English Football. To buy your copy email Ian at iancusack@blueyonder.co.uk.

There seems to be a few travel companies trying to set up this season to take us all to hell and back but just a reminder of the best one in my eyes! See you next issue!
