For quite a long time now, I have become bored and irritated by a growing numbers of Mags who seem obsessed by SAFC. It was always the view of loads of us that that kind of thing should be left to the Mackems, as most of them seem to analyse our every move, utterance, activity, even when they themselves are actually playing! That is one of the reasons why they are labelled SMB.

But I have noticed an increasing number of our tribe mimicking them in this attitude via social media networks and in conversations. Quite frankly, I could not give a toss what happens to the smaller club in our region, as long as they do not get in our way.

I remember a long time ago when a bloke got thumped at the end of one debacle at SJP, when he loudly proclaimed that all was well, despite our own total disaster that day, as the Mackems had lost! That may have been over-harsh treatment for that idiot, but that kind of comment would have fitted in with far more popularity the other way around ,down at the Stadium of Shite or old Joker Park.

Now it seems, some Mags seem to be at their most passionate when mocking the SMB, or worse, the poor and sick of that town down the coast.

Count me out on all of that. Anyone who knows me will confirm that I am not exactly fond of Sunderland FC. A huge catalogue of comments and incidents would testify to this, to say the least! But I do not spend my time scanning their every move, trying to think of the best way to mock poverty down there, or accuse them of being mentally retarded and sub-normal human beings.

You will never take the heat and passion out of the biggest, most intense Derby in English football by far, not even the rich plastics who run our game for TV and global branding can do that. And long may that remain the case.

But for some of those who hate the SMB, the people of that town, and I stress, town, with such venom and poison, are not my comrades. I always find it ironic that some of these characters have never ever met anybody from Sunderland in their lives, let alone actually been there!

One message to that element of our following. Concentrate upon the bigger club in the north east, do not fall into the trap of seeing our main ambition in football as beating the SmallTowners, and remember that Newcastle United FC should have bigger fish to fry.

I focus on the SMB twice a year, if we are in the same league – often they are in a lower one anyway – otherwise, I simply could not give a Stadium of Shite about them.
