I thought about the time when John Hall – don’t really call anybody Sir, but that is me – finally managed to shift an old NUFC regime in, what now, seems a distant past. He, and so many other forces, had combined together to attempt to create a rightful place in world football terms, just exactly where our  fans deserve to be sitting at.

John had a vision. And incidentally, I am not saying this because I am related to him – I am a Hall, but unfortunately, he is not a direct relative!

No. I am writing this simply because it has to be recorded that a group of people, despite differences, CAN change a situation about which they care for. Unity is hard, for sure. But way back in the early 90s, John was a key player in shaking out the old regime, not quite as bad as the current one at SJP, but nearly!

Sure, people can knock John Hall and that regime. The list is endless in terms of accusations, and some were justified. But, howay, everybody can make misjudgements, errors, and mistakes in life. I, for one, felt a wee bit sad that so many dedicated fans could not afford to get into the inevitable capacity stadium via a season ticket. Amongst them was Our Dave, for example, and I had hoped that some kind of scheme could have been worked out to ensure they were not squeezed out as the Club re-entered the Big time, Big Style.

But. And a big But. People need to remember the state of our club, and indeed even our ground, before John Hall, with the help of so many, shifted the sands, and brought in his vision. For Change. I see one legacy, just for kick off, if you will pardon the pun. A proper stadium!

I also recall others, though.  The arrival of Kevin Keegan, the drive of Freddy Fletcher, and the creation of which this city, and region could be proud. So what, we did not achieve the Ultimate Dream, the Premiership title itself.  I did not feel that at the moment I knew we could not do it – though I do admit to being in bar in Washington when we all clapped, fell over, supported the words of Kevin Keegan against Alex Ferguson on that night of the Leeds game near the end!

This is a short toon talk article, no doubt people will be pleased to know!  But it has to go on the record. The John Hall initiative, vision for NUFC, and dream, was far from bad. The opposite actually. Check the facts out, or even better the sheer joy surrounding, for example, the arrival of KK, and of course, Big Al.

By the way, two things. I do have to stress again that, sadly I am not related to John Hall.

And I do not have a habit, with all due respect, of calling anybody Sir. Of all people, I don’t even refer to Bobby Robson, like that. I blame my Mam, and being brought up near Lord Lambton’s estate down in County Durham!

Brian HALL!

And the ps.           I know football has changed beyond recognition, even from the era when John, Kevin, etc, took us back into the Big Time. But that does not mean to say that fans of any club, not least our’s, cannot try to change a situation.    Or is that a dream now!!?
