Over the years, I have been involved in many quiz nights OUT. Always good fun if you dont take things too seriously. Nobody likes the lot who have turned up just to win the prize money and dae an immediate bunk after - the professional bunch. One of those nearly got planted on his head, in an incident many years ago in deepest County Durham, when people twigged that this stranger was simply following any quiz around the area to rip off the cash rewards.

That, as they say, is quite another story.

No. Nothing like a Quiz Night Out. We once formed a team in one of our locals in Shiney. A solid squad was formed, with reserves available in case of injury or suspension for our main players - well, injury normally meaning a very bad hangover uncured, or one of the lads working on the oil rigs. We did well throughout the season, with a very well balanced side. Most of the time anyway! A treasurer was appointed to hold our winnings over the season - we tended to finish third often, second occasionally, and first rarely, but it all led to a canny load of cash. We were a kind of side that would also just get into the Champions League.

Sadly, our club's gainings were all blown away in a big night out in Chester, and so were half the team, after an incident in a Chinese restaurant. Again, that is another story, to say the least.

And in differerent stages of my life, I even ended up with brief glory, or serious stress that is, as a QuizMaster, in Gateshead. In the Azure Blue down the Avenues in Bensham, one bunch, all involved in politics, managed to fail in an answer to a question about a new book just out. It was written by their Party leader! And on another occasion, I got roped in to do some fund-raising quiz at St Joe's Catholic Club in the middle of the 'Heed. One older bloke objected to an answer I read out, as it involved something to do with an area of Palestine or something. I had marked him wrong, but the only trouble was, he was right - and he had fought out there after the Second World War with the British Army!! Aye, brief glory. Na. Serious stress!

But quiz nights OUT aside, I recently managed to go to one IN. Just in my sitting room, on the computer. It was run by the Magpies' Nest, that growing group of NUFC fans scattered across the North East and across the globe. It was brilliant - not least, it let me escape from the younger two daughters who were staying over, who had the telly on at full blast. The Nesties run this weekly event,  with a lot of effort put in, from the administrators of the site, and any Nest volunteer who makes up the questions for the night.

I would like to say that, obviously, I came first, with ease. But I canna. It was bloody tough, set by a woman called Pam - or maybe it just confirmed my weak spots in NUFC knowledge. One of the lads, Geoff, blasted in, to take the gold medal. Canny lad - ish - as I still feel a bit bitter about my lowly placing. It might have been a fix, I thought!!! All joking aside, it was good stuff.

And I would recommend it to any Mags who happen to be in the house, looking for a Quiz Night In. No prizes, but great fun, and testing too!!

Check it out. Magpies Nest site. All NUFC can join, as long as they adhere to rules which bar over the top abusive personal stuff and so on. And you can spend an hour of your night IN, at the Quiz.

ps    in the next Magpies Nest quiz, I am ganna cheat. I want that victory and glory!
