I suppose it was inevitable that I would see a lone magpie this morning. Sure enough, the bird sat on top of a chimney by himself, before flying off on his travels. One for Sorrow, and that, I have to admit, reflected my feelings about leaving the League Cup last night. Given that we are not likely to win the Premiership this season - hate to be a realistic, like - I would have quite happily, to say the least, settled for the Whatever You Call It now trophy.

That bird cut a lonely figure on that roof, but I have come across a group of Magpies who immediately manage to let out their feelings about NUFC, whether of Joy or Sorrow, or any other emotions between the two. Magpies' Nest, you call them. A small band of our tribe got together via Facebook last year, with the aim of creating a network for United fans across the region, and way, way beyond, to chew the cud about all matters Black and White.

Today is their first birthday, since those few set out on that journey. Now, their Nest for fans to fly back to, numbers 1,669, and counting. It is obviously the case that any such group on that scale may not always agree, and it always the case that two Magpies in a room will not always agree either! But that is part and parcel of the purpose of the site - airing your views on events and incidents surrounding something which we all regard as a fairly important part of our lives, to make an understatement!

Many in the Group have become friends with each other, and some of them catch up before or after a match on and off. Others from faraway places meet a few Nesties, as they call themselves, when they get a chance to visit the Cathedral on the Hill. One lot are planning to do so soon. The Danish Toon Army members of the site are going to get a Geordie welcome when they land next, on their Magpie Flight to the centre of football passion.

And as the Nest has expanded, they run many online initiatives, such as Quiz Queen Kaz's regular quizes - obviously - from NUFC trivia teasers to picture tests. Alongside that, they run a topical chat night on their site. Clearly, all that takes massive effort and time for the section of volunteers who administer the whole thing. I was even thinking of offering my skills on the technology side, but decided against it. People who know me will be relieved to hear that, as I would probably end up blowing the whole venture by pressing the wrong button! So, given my relationship with IT, I thought it wise not to offer help on that front!

Anyway, Uniting All Nufc On A Global Scale is their slogan. They have certainly made progress on that aim, given the fact that they have Mags on every continent now, and reach out from Battle Hill to Burma. None are GloryHunters by the way - obviously!

So it is Happy Birthday to Magpies' Nest. As they celebrate their first anniversary, suffice to say that the defeat at Manure is fading from the agenda exchanges. Fading from mine too, although I did want that Cup, and I wanted revenge for that night I spent watching us get beat 7-2 down there.  Reading away, for me and the Nesties, is the focus for immediate future debate now.

catch ya soon. Bry

and as for that Lonely Magpie bird this morning. Well, he might fancy asking one of his mates to fly in the Stadium of Shite on our imminent arrival there, eh.                                  tarah
