TODAY SEES THE BEGINNING OF THE 10-DAY LONG HEATON ARTS FESTIVAL IN THE EAST END OF NEWCASTLE. IN A REPETITION OF LAST YEAR'S SUCCESSFUL EVENT, VARIOUS COMMUNITY ASSOCIATIONS, LOCAL BUSINESS GROUPS , VOLUNTEERS, HAVE AGAIN JOINED TOGETHER TO PROMOTE THE EVENTS, WHICH RANGE FROM STAND-UP COMEDY, INCLUDING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL CHILDREN TO TEST OUT THEIR SKILLS IN THAT SPHERE, ALL THE WAY TO A WIDE RANGES OF ACTIVITES, INCLUDING LIVE ART, AND MUSIC.

MANY OF THE EVENTS ARE FREE.

SENIOR FIGURES WERE DELIGHTED TO GIVE THEIR BACKING TO THE ANNUAL FESTIVAL.

LOCAL MP, NICK BROWN, SAID THAT HE WAS MORE THAN PLEASED TO SUPPORT THE VENTURE. NICK STATED -

" IT IS GREAT TO SEE OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER IN THIS WAY, HELPING TO PROMOTE CREATIVITY IN ALL ITS FORMS. I THINK THAT THE EFFORTS MADE BY ALL THE ORGANISERS DESERVE BOTH SUPPORT AND PRAISE FOR THEIR INITIATIVE."

OTHERS ADDED THEIR VOICES TOO. DR KEITH ARMSTRONG,  WRITER AND POET, ORIGINALLY FROM HEATON ITSELF, SUGGESTED THAT THE WHOLE OCCASION WAS A CLEAR SIGN THAT THE AREA HAD SO MUCH TO OFFER, IN TERMS OF BOTH COMMMUNITY AND CREATIVE SPIRIT.

BARONESS JOYCE QUIN, FORMER MP FOR GATESHEAD, SUPPORTS THIS VENTURE STRONGLY. SHE SAID

" AS A YOUNG CHILD, I OFTEN VISITED HEATON WITH MY FAMILY. I SAW A COMMUNITY THEN, AND I WOULD LIKE TO PRAISE THOSE CONTINUING WITH SUCH A STRONG TRADITION. IT IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF OUR REGIONAL SPIRIT, VERY MUCH STILL IN ACTION."

ONE LOCAL BACKER, MICHAEL CONROY, MANAGER OF THE CHILLINGHAM ARMS, COMMENTED

"  I AM DELIGHTED TO SUPPORT AND HOST SOME OF THE VARIED ACTIVITIES. IT IS BRILLIANT TO SEE WHAT A TALENTED AND DIVERSE COMMUNITY WE HAVE IN THIS AREA."
