Welcome to the latest edition of ‘Toon Talk’ and  Happy New Year to all of our readers. Can you believe that at the time of writing we still occupy a European slot. We also have a new ‘Number 9’ in place at last and we haven’t sold a big name player in the January transfer window! No neither can I but it’s all true! Alan Pardew and John Carver continue to find the right recipe for success on the pitch whilst the chatty mans son Graham Carr finds the right mix off it. I’m just enjoying the ride if I’m honest. There have been far more highs than lows this season and to hit the 40 point barrier in early February is nothing more than sensational as I guess most of us were planning on a season of struggle and discontent. The 3-0 dismantling of Manchester United was as good as it gets and live on television just made that victory all the more sweeter. Some things mean more than silverware don’t they? Although I wasn’t saying that when we were dumped out of the FA Cup at Brighton. Another season goes by without a pot to piss in and I for one am disappointed at that.

So where do I see us finishing this season? Honestly? I’ll go for 8th. I still feel that the squad is thin and that sooner rather than later we will end up scraping the barrel for players especially in defence. Take Colo out of the back four and you have a gaping hole that we will struggle to fill.  Having said that though we seem to have lady luck on our side this season and whenever a big player has been missing through injury, suspension or African Cup Of Nations duty we have had someone stand in and do a job. It shows that we have a good unit within the squad and that we don’t  rely on individuals. In the past if Shearer was missing the team could not cope because they played to one mans strengths. This team is like a spider, it has learned how to operate on 7 legs, or six, it can adapt to any situation and again the praise has to land at the feet of Pardew. From Puppet to Puppetmaster. I said it last issue and I will say it again, he has proved me wrong and I hope he keeps proving me wrong.

As for the regime we have not heard much from Derek since he told us they were renaming the stadium. Of course we never hear anything from Mike but we do know he is on a diet and looks a shadow of his former self. The stadium issue will fester away in the background. The City Council have had their say and I’m sure this issue will be back in the public spotlight once the Olympics are over. Watch this space.

Good to see the club allowing some rival scribes behind the scenes for the day, although I found it rather ironic that the people who went on the ‘dream day out’ complete with lashings of ginger beer and special sarnies made by their mums, were none other than the two Eds from the respective rags, one of whom is a big player in the ‘hugely’ successful ‘Trust’. (They had to give their AGM 2 go’s because not enough people turned up!). I laughed out loud at the orgasmic tone of the review of the visit and sniggered at the hypocrisy of some people who have slated the current regime over the last few years in print, now brown nosing with the best of them. These people have slated me for years in print and behind my back, never having the guts to say things to my face and I find it highly amusing that now the tables are turned they wonder why everybody but there closest bum chums are laughing at them and not with them. I wish them well and look forward to there next issues which will no doubt report on a night out at ‘Shark Club’ and ‘Aspers’ with Dekka and the boys!

Hope you like the new format. We have seen someone else’s fanzine and liked the idea so decided to copy it. See you next issue.
