“Get in Demba son!” Something I, along with thousands of other Geordies have been shouting out with such passion over recent weeks.  Demba Ba deserves a massive chunk of credit for how our beloved black and whites have gone about the first half of the 2011/12 campaign.

When murmurs of him signing on a free arose early in the summer I was a very happy man.  A real good signing I expected, he was on fire for the bubble blowers and it seemed that he could do a hell of a job for us.  I was very optimistic.  After the opening two to three weeks of the campaign, my opinion could not have changed more.  I was shocked, disappointed, angry and fed up.  What had happened to the guy who by all accounts was immense while at Upton Park?  Have we got the wrong guy? He was that bad.  It appeared that he could not even run, never mind cause premier league defences any kind of problem.  A flop even on a free I suspected.  Be it due to Ramadan, injury or whatever, something just wasn’t right.  I felt much the way I do now about Gabriel Obertan.

Demba however has turned things around, found fitness, found form and he has been phenomenal. Goal scoring wise anyway.  I don’t see him ever dominating defenders, holding the ball up or pushing people around.  I see a clinical finisher.  A clinical finisher that for me could end up suffering if not paired with the right man at the head of our side.  I hate to say it but I see him with an Andy Carroll.  A good partner can take him onto the next level.  While squad building is important for me in January I believe that a striker still needs to be top of our list.  How long will his form last? We need somebody to take the burden.

As a team we are not creating many chances and currently, of the ones we are, Demba is putting them away.  This will not always be the case.  We need to invest in a man that can hold the ball up, give us more presence, and help us move up the pitch.  In doing this making Dembas life easier and getting our midfield involved.  For me this is what is preventing us from dominating games.

Demba Ba’s stats are outstanding.  Let’s give him the help he craves and take us on to bigger things.
