I am not even going to try to amend this piece, cross out a word, change a theme. I am just writing this from the heart. On the pitch? A proper footballer, professional, effort unquestioned, skill unquestioned, reliability unquestioned. No wonder Bobby Robson held such regard for him. And the feeling was apparently mutual.

The circumstances surrounding his death are awful. I, and some others, will recognise that, having nearly been there ourselves.

In such times, it is obvious to remember the good times, alongside giving your every best wish, thought, sympathy, prayer, to his family and friends.

The good times? As a Newcastle fan, he gave me some, and more. Headers, solid midfield tackles, excellent passes, and above all, stubborn dedication to his team, and manager. Off the pitch, I never met him. But it seems clear that he was no Bling, Big Head, who had no time to speak to ordinary fans or ordinary people. It appears that he was the opposite of such people.

Gary, you must have had so much internal pain. Over now, mate, and hope you can meet Bobby, and so many others who might just be waiting for ya. I hope so.                                                                      RIP.              And thanks for what you contributed to our lives up here.

More to life than football, eh. But his passing brings football fans together.
