Looked a class above last night against Barnsley, set up one and scored one. One of the best in this league on his day. If we don't get promoted, would love to see him back here..

Where's he been for the last ten Forest games?? One good game in ten, can't believe anybody would want him back.

We'd want him back because he's a class act. I know some of you are small minded enough to deny that but heyho....

I wouldn't define a "class act" as a supposed athlete who turns up to pre-season training looking like Johnny Vegas.

Great player on his day but also very poor when off his game. Ultimately he was too inconsistent, but I'd certainly have him back as a squad player. Somebody who could come off the bench and make something happen.

'He is a class act..about 3 games a season.'

Was one of the 'stars' of the play -off season. Linked up very well with Bamford in particular playing him on for quite a few of his goals as I recall as well as scoring a few himself Why is it necessary to rubbish an ex-player? Karanka in taking him to Forest clearly rates him. Be amusing if he went after Adomah in the close season.

I'd have Tomlin over Downing, always prefer a winger who'll take a risk to try to make something happen than one who only picks the safe option but doesn't lose the ball.

I think he was wasted on the wing to be honest. He played as an inside forward towards the end of our play-off season, but he was at his best playing as a no 10.

Tomlin clearly isn't a 'winger' and played in the number 10 role for us. How you can compare him to Downing as a winger is simply laughable [:o)]

Well he played on the wing for us for over half a season with Vossen in behind Bamford, your memory that short? [:o)]

Interestingly Tomlin also scored more goals in that 1 season than Downing has for us in the last 3 combined.

Think it's harsh to say Downing has stolen a living the past few years, he looks far better this season as he's been managed better. Just saying Tomlin blew hot and cold but made more match winning contributions than Downing has.

'Downing has been a totally underwhelming signing. Local boy or not he has not stepped up to the plate.'

He has made over 100 appearances since returning including 45 in our promotion winning season. It is simplistic to see a player's contribution as to be only measured in 'goals' and 'assists. 3 different managers have picked him consistently however reluctantly.

Tomlin made over 40 appearances in the play-off season scoring 7 goals which is no small contribution to an almost successful season.

When you sign a player on a substantial fee and wages you expect goals and assists on a frequent basis, alas "one of our own" has failed miserable to achieve any of those target.

He was great for us, he was a maverick footballer which creates the perception of inconsistency but his stats were very good in our play-off season and I found him a joy to watch. I never really understood why we sold him, he had plenty of time to shift a stone or two.

That said, I doubt if I'd have him back, it rarely works out second time around and we have Traore now.

Interesting player - Some nice touches and clean shot. A number 10 for me. But he had his weaknesses, did not head the ball, did not in general like to pass, especially if he had a chance to shoot, too slow for the wing and not enough guile , not really a ball winner. Blows a little hot and cold.

Not a classic team player. Bournemouth, Bristol City and Cardiff all had him in recent years, but not wanted him long term.

Despite Downing's failings I would still have him just ahead of Tomlin.

I remember Tomlin being poor at #10 for us, always dropping far to deep and leaving bamford isolated. He moved to the left and vossen went behind bamford, we looked far better.

"did not in general like to pass"

Well I have to vehemently disagree with this. He was by far the best ball player in the team and if you watch the goals back from that season he was heavily involved in a very large proportion of them, usually not as the final scorer (although his goals tally was more than credible).

Tomlin played left and Adomah right, as Vossen supported Bamford during our best performances and results in the play off season - this has been done to death.

Tomlin is a talented lad, but we probably need better in the Championship and definitely in the Prem. I still really like him though.

Have to disagree with this.

Downing has never been a prolific goalscorer at any point in his career, so if we signed him on the basis he would be hitting double figures towards the end of his career, that's our fault, not his.

Having Downing in the team also brought the best out of Friend during the promotion season and the only reason he was allowed to bomb forward as much as he did. Downing also provided far more defensive stability to the team under Karanka than people would like to give him credit for.

He's been a regular under Karanka, Agnew, Monk and Pulis so he is doing what his coaches are asking him to do. If you want a match winner then you'd go for Tomlin, but I think it's unfair to say Downing stole a living.

Great player, still got it. BUT we have no chance of re-signing him currently because Karanka made him a priority shortly after taking over at Forest. I'm sure they will try to sign him permanently in the summer

Now why would Aitor immediately bring Tomlin in for Forest if he was a liability?

Think it would be a decent addition if we stayed down in this division. Can't see Cardiff wanting much for him... £3m??

Be a few Championship clubs in for him i suspect.

So, to sum up

All those managers that keep picking Downing every week are wrong wrong wrong. He's spineless & shyte.

All those managers that keep moving Tomlin on every year or so are wrong wrong wrong. He's a class act, a great player.

Mind you one of those was Karanka who made him virtually his first signing in his next job.

They've had a similar number of clubs proportionate to their respective ages.

Though I don't disagree with the sentiment of your post in defence of Downing (who I like), Tomlin in 2014/2015 vastly outperformed Downing's 3 seasons here imho.
