Over 40 years of supporting Boro there have been many heartbreaking results, Wolves 81, Cardiff FA cup quarter final under Southgate, League Cup final replay against Leicester to name a few but the one that stands out above all others was being relegated at Elland road and seeing Juninho in tears at the end, that result signalled the end of the most glorious era that promised so much but ultimately ended in heartbreak.
Any other contenders?

I agree with Leeds away. The rumours of the players we had lined up if we stayed up etc...
Was at Hillsborough for the final v Leicester. Another horrible one. I think it was because we were in with a good shout of winning, whereas v Chelsea, we weren't expected to win.

Definitely Cardiff in the quarters under Southgate.

I can live with the Europa League defeat and the other cup final defeats because we were always 2nd favourite and we gave it our all. However against Cardiff we were absolutely disgraceful.

It still pains me this day because we will never have a better chance of winning the FA Cup.

The Europa final for me.

With everything that had gone before I think I went into it just feeling that it was written in the stars we would win.

As a fan I'll admit that it took quite a bit out of me and I found it difficult getting up for the games the following season. Think if the club had won that game we would have pushed on to bigger and better things. Just felt like the club suffered a massive hangover after it.

Leicester replay was the other one although walking out of Wembley after Heskey's equaliser was hard to take too. Still wish that had been settled on the day even if we had lost the penalty shootout. Was such an anticlimax

Wolves FAC QF replay away 81
Leicester in 97 at Wembley and at Hillsborough in LCF we were favourites in both.
Leeds 1-1 relegation at Elland Rd in 97 and farewell Juninho.
FAC Semi at Villa Park v West Ham in 06
UEFA Final v Seville 06
Norwich Play off final no show 2015
Cardiff home FAC QF - gutless
That Leicester last home match in 88.
98 CCC Final at Wembley v Chelsea - 3rd cup final defeat to them at Wembley.
arsenal FAC semi at OT - we didn't deserve to lose.
Man U LC semi final 2nd leg at OT - didn't deserve to lose.
Everton sneaking that late equaliser at Ayresome in FAC.
That Darren Williams sickener at home to Sunderland in 97 relegation season
Sheff Wed relegating us on the last day at Hillsborough in 89.
Shrewsbury defeat in 86 for relegation to the third.
Notable mentions too for Orient, Birmingham and Liverpool FAC QF away defeats in the 70's and the City LCSF 2nd leg

This is a bit of a random one but a 4-1 home defeat to Derby - I think in 2000? I was only a young lad at the time, and I remember storming down to the concourse after the 4th goal went in. It was too much to take seeing us getting hammered by a poor Derby side.

3-1 defeat to Newcastle back in 2010. It was a hard one to take because it all but confirmed our relegation and gave them a glimmer of hope of staying up.

My honest opinion is that it's been a generally downhill trajectory for the club since that Cardiff QF. The whole belief seemed to go out of the club that day, and it was no surprise that we were relegated the year after, and let's face it, it's been mostly XXXXXX since then.

The Chelsea cup final was hard as well. I'd convinced myself that we were going to get SOMETHING out of the season by somehow squeezing out the win. My heart sank when Rav declared himself fit because he clearly wasn't, and of course the notion that we'd get something went out of the window after 42 seconds.

Wolves 81 was the first - massive - disappointment for me, I remember Teesside emptying & heading south - no internet / no mobile phones.. though at school.. everyone seemed to know someone & their mates who were going to Wolves that night.. busses with scarves hanging out were everywhere..

A fabulous team, Boro on the up & this was our year - finally.. waking up the next morning & rushing out to do my paper round.. before marking them up I was straight onto the back pages.. gutted..

Agree with Leeds away 0v0.. it wasn't just relegation it was, hope for the future being torn down & having to start again with players not of the calibre of Juno & Rav, Emerson, Festa.. though I'd already - suffered - Wolves & the ripping apart of that promising team...

I know what to expect & I wasn't a kid anymore, so it was tough but I realised that was life & that is football..

*Spurs could be set for a similar downfall if they don't keep Poch, Kane & Erikson..

There are only a couple of games mentioned above that I wasn't at (Shrewsbury in 86 and Sheffield Wednesday in 88).The Birmingham qf was an enormous let down particularly as I was at the first game that season when we beat them 3-0. Appearances at that stage of the FA Cup for Boro were rare and I had only experienced one previously in 1970. I was also at Old Trafford for the replay defeat. The Birmingham defeat at least had the merit of teaching my girlfriend (now my wife) the significance of such reverses. I can't remember the excact words she greeted me with when I saw her that evening but I think they were something like 'It's only a game' or 'why does it matter so much?' She shares my pain now. I actually think that the importance of football has been elevated to an almost unhealthy level. This is illustrated on here by the righteous indignation expressed by some (probably occasionally by myself) when a contrary view to one's own is expressed. Now where were we in the Pulis v Monk argument[;)]?

The Orient defeat in the FA Cup replay, the Birmingham game when big Jack tried to play for a draw and the Wolves cup defeat due to knowing that the team would be broken up.

I would say the Leicester equaliser at Wembley - not so much a defeat, although it did lead to one. We had that game won an ended up drawing due to bad game management. Why didn't we make a sub? [:I]

Can't believe I had to read half the thread before somebody mentioned Birmingham City in the FA Cup Quarter Final in 1975.

I guess many on here won't remember it but all that was standing between Boro to get to their first major final was Birmingham who we'd beaten convincingly twice that season and 2nd division Fulham. Bob Hatton put pay to the dreams of this schoolboy.

There's a lot of false memory in relation to the Birmingham City game in 1975. We didn't go there thinking that there was only Birmingham and Fulham between us and Wembley because the semi-final draw hadn't been made yet. Indeed, the other quarter-finals hadn't been played yet. Leeds, arsenal, West Ham, Ipswich and even Carlisle were all still in the competition at that stage, and they'd all beaten us earlier in the season. We could have faced any of those in a potential semi-final.

Cardiff in 2008 was different in that we knew by the time we played that there was no team to fear about left in the competition.

In terms of disappointment, I've never felt flatter than after the Stockport game in the League Cup semi-final. Sure, we were through to the final, but we lost the game. It just felt, well, flat.

'I have no false memories of that Birmingham game. Have hated St Andrews ever since. I was convinced our name was on the Cup that year. Iíve never felt that since.'

Totally agree.

In those days the FA Cup rather than the League had far greater prestige than the League title attached to it. Going to Wembley for an FA Cup Final was a dream we all had from the moment we became fans. It was the only club game that was televised in those days and we all watched it. We all had a picture in our mind's eye of a Boro team climbing the steps to the Royal Box and the captain receiving the trophy before turning towards us all and hoisting it above his head. In my own case the importance of it was emphasised by the fact that I had been told that my father bought a ticket for my grandfather a Newcastle United Supporter for 10x face value for the 1952 final from a Boro player.
Quarter final appearances had been rare up to that point and we had never even been in a semi-final. It would be 22 more years before we progressed that far and on to Wembley.
By the time of the Cardiff game we had won a trophy been to Wembley 4 times and been in a European final. The disappointment for me was nothing like as great as the Birmingham defeat. To be honest though the memory of the actual game is dim I think we flopped quite badly at Birmingham with a much better team than we had against Cardiff. I am also sure that we accepted disappointment better in those days than fans do now and there was no forum to engage in the ludicrous recriminations which accompany every reverse these days.

Leicester 88 for me.

I was absolutely gutted after that game. I must have heard Prefab Sprout's 'King of rock n roll' on the way home because every time I hear that song it takes me back to that day and saddens me all over again.

Capy, appreciate your point about the draw etc, and you're right it wasn't a given, beat Birmingham win the cup

So what made it seem like it might be our year?

Well unlike most years there wasn't a team left in the cup that was noticeably better than us.

We'd finish the year in 7th place 5 points off top and of those teams you listed only Ipswich finished above us.

As I said we were pretty much as good as anybody that year, that's never happened again

I'd agree with that and most of what emerson_ave said, especially the very last bit. We certainly could beat anyone but, unlike in the previous year (in a lower division), we could be beaten by almost anyone, Chelsea excepted [smi]

We'd also made a bit of a meal of getting to the sixth round - two matches each against Wycombe and Peterborough - and had no real reputation in the Cup. My disappointment was simply not getting to a semi-final for the first time.

And I remember the day well including what beer I had - Davenport's.
