Boro travel to Reading for a tea time kick off that could put us off our food or give Boro fans back their appetite. A win at the empty Madjski could save our skins, it might well be enough to keep us in the division. But with only 3 games left and difficult matches against Cardiff at home and then Garry Monk’s Sheff Wed away, well I couldn’t even stomach the prospect of not bagging 3 points this evening. Boro at Reading 6pm tonight.

Is it is a case of one step forward and two steps back, Neil Warnock was asked yesterday at the zoom press conference. “No, it feels like two steps forward and two steps back.” He laughed. He is drawing on all his experience to keep the positive mentality going and trying to draw the tension out of the situation.

But even the old sage, Neil Warnock, has seen nothing like this before.

“It is strange, I can't tell a lie. The lads are giving me everything, I can't fault the effort. Whatever it looks like I know they are giving me everything but they just keep shooting themselves in the foot.”

And after that brilliant victory away at Millwall we all breathed again and slept for the first time in a while. Only for the nightmare to continue again in the 3-1 defeat by Bristol City. A team that had been on a real downer and shouldn’t have had anything much to play for. Except they could play and they sunk us at the Riverside, good an proper.

“It’s almost like self torture,” admitted warhorse, Warnock. Let’s hope he has managed to turn the charm offensive onto the squad and that now-safe Reading frankly cannot be pestered tonight.

“Everybody is guessing at what could happen here, there and everywhere,” admitted Warnock. “But we have got to concentrate on trying to put a performance in. One of those where we don't make silly mistakes and we take our chances, that is what we need.”

First goal could well be the winner tonight. One of those like where Dael Fry failed to tuck it away from a corner against Bristol City. Bury it this evening and hope against hope Reading decide to finish the season early and Boro can take control and the points.

“I thought we created some good chances against Bristol City and I do believe goals change games and give you a little bit of a lift and the opposite when you concede them.” Let’s heed this simple advice by the gaffer. Score early and then we can all enjoy our tea and perhaps even sleep soundly for what is left of the season.
