FRIDAY 25 OCTOBER 2019

THE COURTROOM SESSIONS: BRENNEN LEIGH & NOEL MCKAY

Martha L Healy
MIDDLESBROUGH TOWN HALL

8pm

£12.50 + booking fee

Texas cultivated, Nashville based songwriting team Brennen Leigh and Noel McKay are set to embark on their fifth tour of the United Kingdom.

Meeting through Austin’s vibrant music scene in 2002. McKay was part of country and Tex-Mex band McKay Brothers, while the bluegrass and classic country educated Leigh had just arrived in Texas to pursue a solo career.

The pair often wrote songs on long car trips, one of them behind the wheel of their then touring vehicle, a 1992 Honda Accord wagon. The result was a mix of story songs that continue to delight in a concert setting.

McKay & Leigh are becoming known as a must-know songwriting team; Steve Earle, Guy Clark and Richard Dobson have all recorded songs written by McKay, while artists such as Lee Ann Womack, Rodney Crowell and Charley Crockett have released songs written by Leigh. Sarah Borges and Sunny Sweeney, among others, have recorded songs the duo composed.

Together they’re an international touring machine; The pair’s dry humor coupled with their well worn, Louvinesque harmonies, McKay’s uniquely South Texas lead guitar style and Leigh’s raw Delmore Brothers inspired flatpicking and mandolin make for an unforgettable combination.

Support comes from Martha L Healy who was raised in Glasgow on a diet of The Eagles, The TRaveling Wildburys, Bruce Springsteen and, occasionally, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas. Her Irish grandparents also drilled her in folk heroes, such as The Dubliners and The Fureys.

At the same time, she was listening to female artists like Sheryl Crow, Carole King, Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline and picked up the guitar to start writing her own songs.

Her current album, “Keep the Flame Alight” was written mostly in Nashville in 2016 and she returned there to record in October 2017, with David Spicher in the producer’s chair ad the city’s best session players providing the music.

Martha has recently played at Celtic Connections in her hometown of Glasgow and showcased officially at ANA UK’s AmericanaFest in Hackney and Red Rooster Festival in Suffolk.

Her album, Keep The Flame Alight, is on the eligible list for Scottish Album of The Year Award (SAY) in 2019.

SATURDAY 26th OCTOBER

Naomi Bedford and Paul Simmonds

Joe Solo

Little Theatre. Toft House

7.30pm-11pm

£7 OTD

Award-winning English vocalist, Naomi Bedford, returns to Teesside with partner Paul Simmonds (The Men They Couldn’t Hang). They have just released their fourth album together, “Singing It All Back Home – Appalachian Ballads of English and Scottish Origin”. The album has already had some great reviews, in common with everything else this duo has released.

“At once plaintive and sensual, vibrant and grave, Bedford’s voice is always arresting” – Mike Houghton

Inspired by the legendary American singer, Sheila Jordan, this exciting project has been taking audiences by storm throughout the UK and Europe and highlights Zoe’s ingenuity in interpreting a lyric.

“The instinctive interplay between the two performers and the opportunity it gives Zoe Gilby to display her vocal improvisational skills and subtle lyrical interpretations of well-chosen songs and Andy Champion to foreground all the possibilities of his double bass.” Sheila Jordan?? CHECKED

TOMMY SMITH AND BRIAN KELLOCK

Saxophonist Tommy Smith and pianist Brian Kellock are Scotland’s international jazz ambassadors, wowing audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Individually their musicianship and dedication have brought them awards including an OBE for Smith in 2019, and the Best Instrumentalist title for Kellock at the Scottish Jazz Awards 2019. Expect revitalised standards and ballads played with passion and tenderness, presented by musicians with a friendship and professional relationship of thirty years’ standing.

GWILYM SIMCOCK

While travelling the world as a member of US jazz guitar legend Pat Metheny’s quartet, British pianist Gwilym Simcock used time away from the stage to compose pieces that have become his second solo album, Near and Now (ACT 2019). Each piece is dedicated to a fellow pianist — Billy Childs, Brad Mehldau, Russell Ferrante, Egberto Gismonte and his first jazz teacher, Les Chisnall. The music has Simcock’s signature sound of rich, modern harmony, driving rhythm, and melodic narrative. This concert will feature some of the music from the new solo album alongside other original pieces and standards.

“Gwilym Simcock is a stupendous improviser and remarkable musician all round … left alone with a piano, he creates music which is neither jazz nor classical but simply itself.”

Dave Gelly, The Observer

5.45- 7.15 pm  – FIRE STATION FREE STAGE

ABBIE FINN TRIO

Leeds College of Music graduates and rising stars Abbie Finn (drums) and Harry Keeble (tenor sax) feature in this new trio with veteran bassist Paul Grainger, playing a mix of Latin tunes, music by artists such as Michael Brecker, Joe Henderson and Dexter Gordon, plus a couple of originals. The trio has played throughout the North East including at Newcastle’s Globe and at  DJAZZ 2019,  where a stellar review by Russell Corbett marked the show a masterclass in straight ahead jazz.

HAND TO MOUTH

A chance gig between guitarist Bradley Johnston & singer  Lindsay Hannon led to a discovery of a mutual love of Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, and their appreciation for albums “Take Love Easy” and “Fitzgerald and Pass…Again” inspired them to join forces and recreate some classic hits, such as “A Foggy Day”, “That Old Feeling” and “The One I Love (Belongs To Somebody Else)”.

“A brilliant young guitarist” – The Crack Magazine

“A voice soulful, brooding & unselfconscious in its longing” – Jazz Journal

7.30 pm –  MAIN HALL     Tickets £15 +bf

SCOTTISH NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA featuring Brian Kellock

It’s time to swing, as the award winning Scottish National Jazz Orchestra with pianist Brian Kellock invite you to celebrate the extraordinary music of three great jazz legends: Count Basie, Duke Ellington and ‘Fats’ Waller. Pivotal to the evolution of 20th Century orchestral jazz, Basie, Ellington and Waller created music that defined an era and left a legacy of wonderful tunes.

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra have chosen a fabulous range of pieces with which to pay their respects and thrill the audience – foot tapping favourites, infectious swing, mellow mood and contemporary jazz – including tracks such as Basie’s wonderful Li’l Darlin’, Kid from Red Bank and Splanky, Ellington’s famous Daybreak Express and Single Petal of a Rose and Waller’s Jitterbug Waltz and Honeysuckle Rose.

Great swing means everything in orchestral jazz and the repertoires of Basie, Ellington and Waller have it in enormous bundles of unbridled joy.

HARMERGEDDON

Empowered electronics, kinetic pulse, drifting texture, undulating drone, amber cloud, alternating current, corrosive rain, dots behind the eyes, light becomes sound, rebuilt from the ground up with whatever comes to hand.

HARMERGEDDON is Nathan Greywater and Polyphoniefae, Dungeness based a/v performance art duo formed in South London in the autumn of 2010.

Their live show blends sound and light in a feedback loop using photophonics (sound carried on light beams), electro magnetic fields and consumer electronic junk with a basis in improvisation and psychedelia. The result verges on sensory overload.
