A stern faced Tony Pulis faced the press this morning and was honest enough to admit his disappointment at another failed transfer window. Though Boro brought in Van La Parra and John Obi Mikel, we did not get width, pace or forward power that we have craved for two seasons. The pressure is on now but Pulis is appealing to the fans to understand and back the team and the club as we try to fight our way out of a financial corner as well as the division.

Tony Pulis had only good words to say about the chairman, Steve Gibson. He would not be here without Gibson and his admiration for him. We are paying now for the chairman’s massive backing of the promotion drive last season and also failed attempts to stay in the Premier. There is no blame game, everyone wants only success. We are paying now for throwing everything at it.

He knows that the fans are distraught but he says the players are the same as is everyone at the club and indeed there was a real sombre mood over the training ground today. But Pulis hopes we can rouse ourselves and stand tall against adversity. If we can make the play offs and promotion it will be some achievement but it will only be possible if we are unified and all go for it together.

Tony Pulis opening statement today is below.

Everyone around the football club will be disappointed there is no hiding the fact that there were players that we wanted to bring in to the football club that we have not been able to bring in. There were areas of the team that ever since I have joined 13 or 14 months ago that I have wanted to strengthen but unfortunately we have not been able to do that yet. It has been a window that in some respects has made the team a little bit weaker rather than stronger. Danny (Batth) going to Stoke has left us a little weaker there. Mikel and Van La Parra are good signings and will help us at the back end of the season I’m sure. But I am disappointed.

I have had three windows here and I have signed 3 permanent players, McNair, Saville and Flint. I have signed 7 or 8 on loan. You are hoping and praying that you can do more than that.

Listen I have got to say I think the club has got an exceptional person in charge in Steve. The money that he has put into this football club and what he has done for this football club has been extraordinary. There is absolutely no criticism whatsoever in that area. It is a little bit déjà vu in that Tony Mowbray got caught in a very similar position, coming in when the finances weren’t brilliant and had 2 years clearing everything out and having to cut back. It is something that the club will never ever do again, fall into this position again.
It has been done, there is nothing we can do about it. I have to say this about the squad I think they are absolutely fantastic. I will put some stats down. We were 9th when I came into the football club, once we got into the top six we have never been out of it. The club has made a big profit on transfers. We have cut the wage bill. The players deserve a real, roaring well down for what they have done.

I think we have got a good group, the group has got to understand where we are. Yesterday I took all my staff down to the pub and we knew well nothing was going to happen (in transfer window) and I had a good chat with them. We will have a good chat with the player today about the situation and I want supporters and everyone else at this football club to get behind the group. They have been wonderful. From January to January we would be top of the league. We have not brought what we wanted to bring in but it is still a good group and the group hopefully will get us through. Fingers crossed.
