Boro's reward for defeating Notts County is another home draw against lower league opponents, as Rochdale will provide opposition in the 2nd round at the Riverside.

Boro played Dale at Spotland in the summer. A young side, very similar to that which defeated County on Tuesday night went down to defeat in the last kick of the game in the pre season friendly. Just how many young veterans of that encounter will feature in the 2nd round tie to be played in the week commencing Monday 27 August.

The second round is regionalised with north and south sections to keep the mid week journeys to a minimum. The third round is where the European playing Premier teams enter the fray. Brighton will host Southampton in the only all-Premier League tie.

Newcastle have a tricky game away at Aitor's Nottingham Forest. Jamie Vardy could return to his old club as Leicester were drawn away at Fleetwood Town.

So, while the League Cup will be far from Tony Pulis priorities this second round tie could provide another opportunity to test out the young talent of the Academy. Many of Tuesday night's heroes played away at Rochdale in summer. Tuesday goalscorer, Luxembourg international, Enes Mahmutovic, really impressed at the ground formerly known as Spotland. Penalty king Stephen Walker who confidently beckoned to the Boro crowd at the Riverside, made a late impact at Rochdale also. Many could feature again in the League Cup encounter.

If it is anything as exciting as the swashbuckling 3-3 draw we witnessed against Notts County then the Riverside deserves to be choc-a-block with supporters. It was truly a wonderful night to get behind so much raw, young talent. Academy players, really going for it, without fear.

Cannot wait.
