In an amazing twist former Boro boss, Garry Monk has been appointed manager of Birmingham City just in time for our visit tomorrow night. Monk, dismissed hours just after a pre-Christmas Boro away win at Sheff Wed is returning to League management with a three and a half year deal at St Andrews. It is bound to add extra spice to our game tomorrow night. Kick off. 7.45pm.

Birmingham City have appointed Garry Monk as new manager on a three-and-a-half-year deal. Still just 38 but already having managed three clubs in Swansea, Leeds and Middlesbrough, Monk will be hoping to stick around longer this time around.

But few jobs come with such high pressure as Monk becomes the fifth manager in 15 months. The club have been locked in a perennial relegation battle ever since the owners inexplicably sacked Gary Rowett on day one, they were play off challengers at the time. But his replacement, Zola, immediately crashed the team down the league from promotion contenders to a team with a relegation death wish. Surely the worst managerial change in the West Midland club's history.

Monk will take over from the fans-choice Steve Cotterill, sacked because he couldn't revive the Blues from their relegation... blues.

The official announcement from Birmingham reads:

"The club is delighted to have secured the services of one of the game's brightest young managers."

Monk will bring in his backroom staff, all removed along with him at Boro. The one exception is he will be teaming up once more with Pep Clotet, Monk's assistant at Swansea and Leeds. He was trying his hand as manager at Oxford United in the first half of the season with an alarming lack of success.

So, it will be interesting to see Garry Monk once more tomorrow night. Remember his first game for Boro was in the West Midlands when we lost 1-0 at Wolves. Nothing personal but our play off push means we need it to be another losing start for Monk tomorrow.
