What a result for Boro yesterday as news filtered through that Adama Traore’s red card in Saturday’s clash with Sunderland had been overturned. Now the second reversal we have seen in recent weeks, following Rudy Gestede's wrongful dismissal at Norwich City. Boro fans must feel as if the world has turned upside down. Can we now capitalise and go on and clinch a play off place?

Adama Traore was tearing Sunderland apart on Saturday in the derby that wasn't a derby. The only means of stopping him was by foul means rather than fair. Jake Clarke-Salter was rightly sent off for going straight through on Traore and sending him cartwheeling through the air. How on earth the home fans could feel this was unjust is amazing, but they booed Traore as if he was a villain for the rest of his stay on the field. Which wasn't long.

Despite the Traore incident being right down below us most of the Boro fans were following the ball. Some did see his arm raised but Tony Pulis later revealed that our winger was provoked into reacting by Bryan Oviedo. The Boro boss reckoned the wily and experienced former Everton defender (insert your own word for it here) gave our man a poke in the eye, then was pushed in the chest in reaction. Oviedo then crashed to the deck as if he and not Traore had been assaulted in the face.

Clearly the FA saw it exactly that way too. Now Adama is free to exact his revenge against Leeds, Birmingham, Barnsley and Brentford by tearing them apart as he was doing to Sunderland. Can we combine this rightful reprieve for our most exciting player, with the re-emergence of Patrick Bamford as a potent goalscoring centre forward? What a prospect that could be. The dropped points at Stadium of Light could be quickly forgotten if Traore and Bamford propel us to victories in our next run of games.

Weather permitting on Friday, of course.
