It is that time of the year when we are usually accustomed to Stewart Downing been linked with a move to a so-called big Premier League club and fearing he may move on.

Well, the Downing scenario has long gone as he obviously moved to Aston Villa earlier in the summer. The question now remains; will we lose any of our top players before the transfer window closes on Bank Holiday Monday?

I think and yes this is my personal opinion, that we will struggle to hold onto some of these players as top flight English and European clubs panic to finalise their playing staff until January.

If we look at the main players in question Tuncay, Afonso Alves, Huth, Wheater, O’Neil and possibly Pogatetz. The latter three of the six have in some terms stated a desire to remain, though Wheater has made his statement the most convincing and public. The others are then realistic possibilities to leave the club and in some respects many fans will be saying good riddance to poor players.

Many rumours have circulated this summer with all of the above been linked to clubs here, there and quite literally everywhere. Question is; is there any smoke without fire?

An emphatic no is the answer. Agents will be working on behalf of any player to get them a deal at a top flight team to increase the potential earnings and international chances of the players. The club is obviously in a reasonably strong position to demand respectable fees for these players and then allow Gareth Southgate to reinvest these monies but the closer to the deadline we get the less likely it is to happen.

Should we be bothered by these departures? I believe other than Huth and Wheater we may not look a lesser side. Yes we would all like Tuncay to stay but if the right offer comes in he will be off. These two defenders have formed an impregnable partnership that has set the foundation for the coming season’s promotion push.

It will be a nervous few days on Teesside and as the window counts down to closing we will certainly be biting our nails. Fingers are crossed and let us hope we have a strong enough team come September 1st to keep the momentum going!
