We Need Men of Steel

Those of us who are old enough will fondly remember the lines below; surely this is what the Boro require to fight back in the coming season and beyond, we have developed a soft centre, pregnable to all who are able to play through us or kick through us.

“We are men of iron,

We are men of steel,

Wrestle with the lion,

And we’ll show you what we mean!”

This is what we need and in a time when uncertainty surrounds a main provider of jobs in the area then these lines could not be more poignant.

Times are hard in Middlesbrough we have suffered relegation and Corus is on the verge on making mass redundancies which will send a ripple through the town and area with catastrophic affects.

As a town we have pulled together in recent weeks to stay loyal to our team and to offer support to the work-force of Corus, now the team needs to develop the same back bone as the fans and people of the town which bears the same name.

We showed last season we are a very talented team with potential in many areas of the field and off the field but now we need some steel and grit to move the team forward for the coming season and the years beyond that.

Despite some disharmony towards Gareth Southgate, fans need to realise that we need to move on and refocus for what will be a very difficult season ahead.

A strong assistant manager is definitely required to compliment Southgate as Messer’s Cooper, Crosby and Agnew appear to lack this character. Would Stuart Pearce be interested?

Investment is required in the playing staff and with many possible exits from the club and Gibson’s’ restructuring should allow for reasonable investment in the playing staff.

Though the recent links to Paul Scholes and Gary Neville may appear to be wide of the mark these are the type of players required. Looking at Birmingham City as an example of this the shrewd signings of Lee Carsley and Kevin Phillips last close season underlined how experience has to pay dividends.

Who will we sign? It’s the old cliché time will tell but we should think positive that some much needed iron, steel and experience is required on the playing field and let’s hope Corus remains a local industry in the coming months and years.
