Schwarzer Do Your Usual

I appreciate he played over 350 games for the Boro but I never really felt confident with Mr Schwarzer between the sticks defending for the red and white! I personally think the goal keeper we viewed at Bradford City wasn’t the same custodian who kept goal for over 11 years.

I think we’d be better still having him rather than Brad Jones or Ross Turnbull (no disrespect lads) but I don’t feel he was top quality and there was always a mistake in him, which would rear its ugly head at the most inappropriate of times.

The Carling Cup Final could be a prime example of this; his mistake led to Bolton’s goal and made it very nervous for the remainder of the game, despite several good saves.

Tomorrow sees his first return to the Riverside since departing last summer on a free transfer to Fulham. He has on occasion looked impressive down at the Cottage but he hasn’t improved on making his mistakes, take the Kieran Richardson free-kick for Sunderland as my example of this.

I feel his main quality is shot stopping which as a goal keeper has to be the first skill they develop. He has no command of his box, makes the defence in front of him play with insecurity; his kicking used to be a private joke at home games at the Riverside.

I’ve always classed Stephen Pears as the best goalkeeper to play for the Boro and the older generation say Jim Platt was their favourite. For me the best goalkeeper we’ve had in recent times was Mark Crossley, who had an excellent run when Schwarzer was injured several years ago.

So how about doing your old team a huge favour tomorrow Mark? Have a nightmare of a game and give the Boro the much needed three points in the fight for survival. Maybe then I will consider you in the list of recent all time goal keepers for the Boro but for reasons other than playing for our beloved team.

Schwarzer has conceded less than a goal a game for Fulham this season so let’s get that average up. Conceding 5 in this match would make it one a game. What do you reckon Mark?
