A Canadian consortium lead by Syrian businessman Yahya Kirdi is in the 'final stages' of completing the purchase of Liverpool Football Club from current owners George Gillet and Tom Hicks.

The American duo have listed the club for sale for three months and now after interest from several other groups, including Chinese group QSL Sports Investments, Kirdi's group appear to be the front-runners.

The group is understood to have agreed a re-financing plan to clear the club’s debt and is now negotiating the buyout price from the duo.

Kirdi told the BBC: "Agreement has been reached on all major terms including the purchase price, repayment of the existing bank debt and financing of a new stadium in Liverpool's Stanley Park.

"A formal purchase agreement between the parties is in the final stage of negotiation," Kirdi went on.

But it appears the club is not Kirdi's just yet as Huang has not given up on investing, with a statement from his Hong Kong office reading: "Mr Huang would like to emphasize that he has registered interest in investing in Liverpool FC but has made no formal bid."

The takeover news comes on the back of an increasingly good summer for the Reds, as new manager Roy Hodgson has taken over, brought in England International Joe Cole and ensured the commitment of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres in recent weeks.
