Liverpool fended off Wigan at Anfield today thanks to goals from David N'Gog and suib Fernando Torres, taking them to sixth in the Premiership and keeping them in touch with the race for fourth spot.

N'Gog beat Chris Kirkland to the ball and headed home from Fabio Aurelio's cross and sub Torres eventually back-heeled in from close range before Charles N'Zogbia grabbed a consolation for Wigan.

The Reds had the best of the opening ten minutes and after one attack full of last ditch Wigan tackles and unfortunate deflections, Fabio Aurelio eventually had the time to swing in a cross to the box from deep and N'Gog got a glancing header to beat former Red Kirkland.
The home side were lucky not to lose the lead soon after though as Paul Scharner was given time and space- but the Austrian wastefully headed straight at Pepe Reina.
N'Gog then set up Kuyt at the other end, Kirkland redeeming himself by saving from the Dutchman, and the Frenchman had a chance to double his tally but his effort swept wide.
Charles N'Zogbia brought a save from Reina at the top of the second half, then Kuyt was again set up by N'Gog but his pot shot floated over.
Daniel Agger stooped low and missed out on a good headed chance before Jason Sctotland hit the crossbar after Reina had been outjumped by two Wigan players.
Wigan were made to rue the missed chance when Steven Gerrard challenged for a header from a long ball, sending substitute Fernando Torres, making his 100th appearance for the club, rounded Kirkland.
However Titus Bramble blocked the Spaniard's uncharacteristically tame finish, only for El Nino to back-heel home.
N'Zogbia added a late twist with some twists of his own inside the box, drifting past three defenders then sharply finishing in injury time to make for a tense finish.
