Liverpool ended a miserable Champions League campaign with a 2-1 home defeat to Fiorentina after Alberto Gilardino's last minute winner this evening.

Yossi Benayoun headed the Reds in front just before half-time from a Steven Gerrard free-kick.

But winger Martin Jorgensen put the visitors level after the hour mark with Gilardino setting the Dane free inside the area to finish in the bottom right hand corner.
And with injury time running out substitute Juan Manuel Vargas crossed for the Italian striker to steal the win.
Liverpool had started with Gerrard and Alberto Aquilani making his first start for the Reds, with Fernando Torres also coming on just after Fiorentina's equaliser.
But an inexperienced Liverpool backline couldn't cope with the first strength Italian side, and despite having the lion's share of possession fell to a dissapointing end to the european campaign.
