Goals from Dirk Kuyt and a Joseph Yobo own goal gave Liverpool a 2-0 victory in the Merseyside derby today lifting the Reds to fifth in the Premiership and ending a poor week for the club on a high.

Javier Mascherano had a hand in both goals, his strike deflecting heavily off Yobo for the opener just after ten minutes and late on Kuyt tapped home after Tim Howard could only parry Albert Reira's strike.

The result lifts the mood around Anfield in the week the club exited the Champions League and eases part of the pressure on manager Rafael Benitez.
Some would say the score was a little harsh on the home side who failed to convert several chances, winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov missing the best of them from eight yards out.
The goal was the first action of note, and though the Argentine midfielder received his teammates plaudits his shot looked to be heading wide before striknig the Nigerian defender and wrong-footing Howard.
Jo had a goal ruled out soon after for offside, before Emliano Insua pushed up to connect with a swinging cross from Glen Johnson but Howard saved comfortably.
In first half stoppage time Jo had another effort ruled out for offside and Stephen Pienaar almost scored when his shot wriggled through the grasp of Pepe Reina but the Spaniard recovered well.
Tim Cahill's header and Marouane Fellaini's follow up were both blocked by Reina before sub Reira receieved the ball in space just outside the area and saw his effort saved by Howard.
The slippery rebound fell straight to  Kuyt's path though and the Dutchman sealed the result for the Reds.
