Liverpool pulled off a 2-0 victory over old enemies Manchester United at Anfield today as goals from Fernando Torres and David N'Gog saw off the Premiership holders and clinched the Reds' first win in five games.

Javier Mascherano saw red for the hosts after two yellow cards and for the visitors Nemanja Vidic suffered the same fate.

The Reds refused to be distracted by their recent poor form, a fans protest march against the club's owners and speculation over manager Rafa Benitez's future all in the build-up to the game.

On the balance of play the hosts deserved their win, roared on by a boistorous Anfield crowd, even to the admittance of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who also conceded his side were daunted by the atmosphere.

The Reds opened brightly with Lucas having a strike blocked within 5 minutes.

Fabio Aurelio's free-kick and Dirk Kuyt's rebound were both well saved by Edwin Van der Sar, and Kuyt then struck wide.

United offered a header from the fit to start Wayne Rooney but the Englishman failed to trouble Pepe Reina.

And the opener came just after the hour mark as Torres stayed onside brilliantly to run on to Yossi Benayoun's through ball and hammer past the Dutch 'keeper.

The closing moments of the game were expectedly frantic with a flurry of cards, and former Red Michael Owen's introduction to a hostile reception.

Vidic then Mascherano saw red as the home crowd cheered on Liverpool and as United pushed for an equaliser the ball broke first to Dirk Kuyt then to Lucas who set N'Gog up for a one-on-one with Van der Sar which the young Frenchman won with a composed finish.
