A freak goal for Sunderland's Darren Bent that deflected past Pepe Reina via a beach ball that had bounced onto the pitch from the away fans' end condemned Liverpool to a 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light.

Missing both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres the Liverpool side looked disjointed and it was defence that Rafa Benitez's side looked suspect.

The goal for Bent came on just five minutes, with play from Lee Catermole and Steed Malbranque in the build-up, but Reina was dumbfounded by the large Red ball.

The bizarre event shocked the away backline despite the return of Daniel Agger, and youngster Jay Spearing also had a bad day.

The insecurities showed when a deep cross from Phil Bardsley found Bent again and the former Spurs striker nodded wide.

Bent was the thorn in the side of the Reds all day as he rounded Reina and hit the post from an angle.

Dirk Kuyt was Liverpool's main goalscoring threat in the absence of their star duo and he forced Craig Gordon into a fine stop.

And their was a final scramble in a lengthy period of injury time as David N'Gog scewered a chance wide after a goalmouth furore, but the Reds were condemned to a fourth Premiership defeat.
