Liverpool defeated Leeds 1-0 in their Carling Cup third round tie thanks to a scrappy goal from David N'gog as a second string side failed to make chances pay at Elland Road.

The young Frenchman capitalised on slow Leeds defending that allowed him to stay onside, latching on to a mis-shot from Javier Mascherano before turning and slotting home.

Leeds had started the brighter with home support and Michael Doyle wasted a fine headed chance.

Then a goal that could have been claimed by either Jermaine Beckford or Lucian Becchio was ruled out harshly for offside, Beckford adjudged to have been off as Lubomir Michalik headed goalward.

There were several chances for outspoken wingers Ryan Babel and Albert Reira, with the Spaniard's header the more clear-cut.

Beckford was then set free but Diego Cavalieri, deputising for Pepe Reina, made the save- soon followed by N'Gog's goal.

With just under half an hour to go there was a contentious moment for Mascherano as he appeared to strike Beckford with the ball out of play.

But it is Benitez's side who continue to round three, and continue with the manager's aim of reaching the final.
