Liverpool fan Michael Shields, wrongly accused of the attempted murder of a barman after Liverpool's Champions League final in 2005, has been freed and granted a royal pardon.

Shields has been detained by Bulgarian authorities since the incident but has always protested his innocence.

And now Justice Secretary Jack Straw has granted Shields a royal pardon- claiming new evidence has come to light in recent weeks.

Straw said: "I will not set out in this statement all the evidence that has come to light over the last two weeks but suffice it to say that there is very good reason to believe I was being told the truth.

"I was told in the course of the visit," made by Michael Shields' family to the suspected culprit, "that the man made an oral confession in front of several other people," Straw's statement read.

Shields' solicitor John Weate said: "At first he couldn't believe it after all these years and knock-backs.

"But now he is absolutely ecstatic and so are his family," Weate concluded.
