Liverpool saw off the threat of Stoke City 4-0 at Anfield this evening, taking revenge for Tony Pulis' side taking four points off them last year- Fernando Torres got off the mark, and there were goals Glen Johnson, David N'Gog and Dirk Kuyt.

The game came after press speculation that Rafael Benitez was again under pressure due to board room issues but this was swept aside but a display full of attacking power saw off any negativity on Merseyside this evening.

The home side were on top for large parts of the game as the Anfield crowd roared them on to a first home victory of the season at the first time of asking.

The midfield were creating chances in the absence of Xabi Alonso, and it was his replacement Lucas was the first to test Stoke 'keeper Thomas Sorensen with a fierce long range drive set up by the in-form Steven Gerrard.

He then ran in off the right flank to set up Torres for his first of the season, the square pass across the box leaving an easy chance for the Spaniard.

And it should have been 2-0 before half-time as full-back Emilano Insua tucked a shot wide after a fast counter-attack from the home side.

But then right at the end of the half Stoke failed to clear a corner and as Kuyt's header was saved Johnson scissor-kicked home for his first Red goal.

Rory Delap threatened for the visitors in the second half, his stinging drive held well by Pepe Reina.

Johnson then went close in a game where he looked lively, Sorensen again denying the full-back.

And it was three when Gerrard moved in from the wing with a creative spin and squared for Kuyt to slide home.

And the demolition was finished when Johnson clipped in a cross that Sorensen could only parry and David N'Gog nodded home into the empty net.
