The 2009/10 Premiership season began poorly for Liverpool as they were beaten 2-1 at White Hart Lane by Harry Redknapp's side, defenders Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Sebastien Bassong scoring for the home side and cancelling out Steven Gerrard's penalty.

Debutant Glen Johnson won the spot kick but it was not enough as Asso-Ekotto screamed home from 25 yards and Bassong headed home from a Luka Modric free-kick on his debut.

The home side dominated for much of the game, and started brightly through ex-red Robbie Keane, who could easily have headed into the half-time interval on a hat-trick.

First Pepe Reina thwarted his former team mate, scuffling across goal after a clever Modric set-up.

The Irishman and Spaniard then went head to head once more and Reina came out on top again, before Keane blasted over when free inside the area.

Gerrard drove wide from long range before Tom Huddlestone smashed a free-kick into the wall- Assou-Ekotto picking up on the loose ball and slamming home with a ferocious effort.

The blow just before half-time looked to turn the Reds into a wounded animal for the second half and Glen Johnson steamed forward from the right on 55 minutes, Gomes bringing him crashing down in the area.

Skipper Gerrard stepped up to finish powerfully down the middle, and the Reds were back in the game.

The lead however was to last three minutes before Modric swung a deep free-kick to the far side of the area and Bassong announced his Spurs debut with a goal- outjumping the bandaged Jamie Carragher and Johnson.

There was late pressure, and a good headed chance for Torres but it was to no avail as Liverpool lost their opening day fixture for the first time in 16 years.
