Liverpool were defeated 2-1 in their final pre-season game at Anfield by Athletico Madrid, and were dealt another blow when Jamie Carragher was forced off with an ankle injury yesterday- putting the defender at risk of missing next week's season opener.

Goals from Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan cancelled out Lucas' late consolation, but Carragher was forced off within the first quarter of an hour and joins Fabio Aurelio, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger on the sidelines.

The news could see Rafa Benitez step up his apparent interest in Hull's Michael Turner, with only youngsters standing in reserve, deutant Glen Johnson may be forced to move into centre-half for the Premiership opener against Tottenham next sunday.

The friendly against Madrid showed a little concern, with Sanchez Ayala starting alongside Carragher, with Martin Kelly and San Jose Dominguez on the bench for cover.

In the final third Liverpool were at near full strength, with Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano all starting.

The first half was busy as Madrid went into half-time with a two-goal lead, Aguero first striking- Antonio Lopez crossing in as the Argentine headed home.

The home side looked to strike back as Torres had two efforts blocked and Gerrard hit the side netting before former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan struckl home.

Madrid counter-attacked from a Reds corner with Simao setting Forlan up to curl into the top corner first time.

Madrid were still a threat in the second half though the Reds were on top, Torres having a hat-trick of chances but looknig lively.

Lucas got Liverpool off the mark with eight minutes to go as Gerrard found him inside the area to finish low into the corner.
