Yep. Well done Thornely. Top stuff.

Hope he doesn't suffer 'Robbie Joseph Syndrome' when he gets a full contract though.

I think we all agree that Thornely deserved a contract and a chance but...(an this is no criticism just an observation) he has gone off the boil in the CCC quite drastically.
Last few innings
L v Glous - 0....so far
L v Kent - 0 & 4
L v Hamps - 0 & 9
L v Northants - 22 & 4
L v Essex - 115
L v Yarks - 31 & 17

Add to that the second XI title fixture where he got 16 and 2 shows that in non limited overs, since the Essex game 1st Aug, 9 innings with top score of 22. The kind of scores that saw Boyce get us off to bad starts and under significant pressure for his place.

To do what he did when he first came here shows he has the talent but clearly he has a history at other clubs of not pushing on. I hope that isn't the scenario here and that actually the end of season has come at a good time for him to regroup.

It should be remembered where Thornely come from before being too critical. He was playing club cricket for Sutton. He obviously had to overcome the disappointment of being released by the county he joined at the age of 9. In 2005 he scored 1,359 runs @ 90 with six centuries for Brighton College and is one only five batsman ever to pass 1,000 runs.

No crictism, just a touch of concern. He has the talent clearly but historically he has not produced the goods often enough hence his release and record at first class level.
From where he has come from he did burst on the scene for us and earned a contract but that may have taken it's toll so the fact that the season is ending may do him the power of good.
Foxy, who were the other 4?

Looks like what Meet was hoping wouldn't happen has happened.

Since he has been here his First Class (inc Leeds/Bradford)

97 & 131 v Glam (a)
6 v Derbys (h)
3 & 39 v Gloucs (a)
31 & 17 v Yorks (h)
115 v Essex (a)
22 & 4 v North (a)
0 & 9 v Hants (h)
0 & 4 v Kent (h)
0 & 36 v Gloucs (h)

2013

14 & 12 V Hants (a)
22 v Kent (h)
0 & 13 v Leeds/Bradford (h)
0 v Gloucs (h) so far

Therefore in his last 14 innings he has scored 136 at 9.71 with a top score of 36.

In those 14 innings he has been passed 22 only once.

In his last 7 First Class matches, in the first innings he has had 5 ducks.

His highest score at home is 36.

In 22 innings he had passed 40 only 3 times with 97,131, 115.

Total runs 575 at 26.14.

Clealry as we have said the lad has talent but I think we are seeing why lots of other counties looked and left alone. I am unsure how long deems a player having a chance but we are close to a situation where he cannot say that he hasn't been given a chance.

I am unsure again whether it is mental but his displays against Glams when he first came and was trying to get a contract suggest he had the head for it. Pehaps it is another player who has suffered the longer he has been associated with PFW.

If you take out 3 scores out of 22 innings then he has 232 in 19. It isn't fair taking a players best results away to prove anything but what they shows is then his reliability and general performance hasn't been no where near good enough. Seems that when he gets in he is good but never gets in often enough.

Looks like he read your post Glenny.

I would not think for a moment that a pro cricketer would relax having won a contract but he is clearly out of form at the moment.

Maybe give him another go in the one dayer on Saturday; the different approach can sometimes kick start a bit of confidence. If he fails again then he needs to go to the Seconds for a while. Maybe he's one of those streak players.

Interesting day in prospect tomorrow....

Agree today will be a big day. Only needs a couple of partnerships to turn a game like this. Lets hope that the first one comes before Boyce and Shiv so that they can turn a reasonable effort into a good effort rather than getting us out of the wotsit again.

Not sure what it is about Thornely. Been here a good while now and if you take the first game out of the equation, he has been passed 50 once.

Clearly he isn't doing well at the minute but whether that is as he is out of form, I don't know. Apart from Glams last yeat has he really ever been in form? He record before LCCC was poor and apart from 1 game at Glams his record is poor.

Looks a good player to me and showed massive mental strength in that Glams game. Scored a ton in a pre season job v Notts that should have provided the basis for going into the season with a degree of touch.

I agree that the change in format in the 1 dayer may hopefully just be the jump start he needs

He is clearly out of form at the moment but hopefully the one-day match today will prove the turning point for Thornely. He has the ability he just needs to rediscover the dogged resistance and determination that won him a contract with Leicestershire in the first place.

I don't think he has got that much ability.

His first class average as an opener is about 22. This is based on a lot of innings. That tells me he isn't good enough.

We have a developing theme at leicester. New player arrives with a track record of underperformance; gains contract through initial performances; slides into dire form etc etc.
