Leeds United have been linked with Ireland international goalkeeper Keiren Westwood. The Coventry City star’s contract runs out at the end of the season and United are among an endless list of admirers for the 26-year-old.

Celtic, Wigan Athletic and Newcastle United are said to be keeping tabs on the former Carlisle United shot stopper, but United boss Simon Grayson sees Westwood as an ideal replacement for Kasper Schmeichel who is expected to seek pastures new this summer.

Westwood arguably made his big break against United at Elland Road in the League One Play Offs semi final of 2008. Jermaine Beckford and Dougie Freedman among others were denied by superb saves which kept Carlisle alive in the tie, he soon gained international recognition by  being called up to the Ireland squad three days later. The following summer Westwood signed a three year deal with Coventry City, in his first season with the Sky Blues he finished in the Championship PFA Team of the Year before winning the Player of the Year, Players’ Players of the Year with Coventry in 2010.

It’s evident to see that United face stiff competition for whom many believe to be the best goalkeeper outside of the Premier League, but should he be a Leeds player come next season there’d be unanimous agreement that United have pulled off a great signing.
