Everton opened their pre-season trip Down Under with a win over Aussie champions Sydney.

Victor Anichebe’s 46th minute strike was the only goal of a lively encounter.

.The Toffees, wearing their new pink away strip, looked comfortable in their first game of the tour.

.David Moyes gave a debut to 20-year-old Maguye Gueye, and the £1m buy from Strasbourg showed great potential.

.Early on James Vaughan was played in by Leon Osman, and hit a crisp effort which keeper Ivan Necevski saved.

.38-year-old Dwight Yorke was in the Sydney side, but looked some way past his best.

.The second half started with a couple of changes for Everton and a goal. Tim Cahill replaced Jack Rodwell, and Gueye replaced James Vaughan.

.Within a minute Anichebe produced a terrific turn in the box, and blasted the ball high into the net.

.Moyes later gave Louis Saha a chance to stretch his legs later along with Jose Baxter, the later showing some clever touches and movement.

.Sydney had chances to level but Everton held on for a morale-boosting win.

.Everton: Turner, Hibbert, Distin, Jagielka, Baines, Arteta, Osman, Bilyaletdinov (Baxter, 64), Rodwell (Cahill), Anichebe (Saha), Vaughan (Gueye). Subs not used: Silva, Mustafi, Coleman, Jutkiewicz.’
