Tim Cahill’s World Cup could be over almost before it has begun.

The Everton legend was red-carded for a foul early in the second half – and with Australia losing 4-0 and Cahill now due to miss the two remaining group games, that could be it for him in South Africa.

He appeared to bring down midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger with his knees but it was right under the eyes of Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez. Cahill was stunned to see the colour of the card.

Cahill will now miss Australia's final two group matches against Ghana on June 19 and Serbia on June 23.

At least it has been a better start to the tournament for USA pair Tim Howard and Landon Donovan, who both played important roles for Everton last season.

Both were influential in their team’s draw with England. Howard is expected to recover from an injury picked up in that game to face Slovenia – who now lead the group – later in the week.
