Everton are furious over a disallowed goal which has ended their European dream. Phil Jagielka’s goal looked perfectly legal at Stoke – but it was ruled out for Victor Anichebe being in an offside position.

The dropped points in the 0-0 draw mean Everton can no longer catch seventh-placed Liverpool and so will not be in Europe next season. Assistant boss Steve Round was unhappy on both points.

The Toffees appeared to take the lead at the Britannia Stadium when Jagielka headed home a corner, but Anichebe was said to be in offside position as the defender met the cross.

Round said: ‘We can't quite understand why it was disallowed to be honest - it looked a perfectly good goal to us. We believe that Victor is standing in an offside position when Phil Jagielka heads the ball but the corner's come in, he's headed it straight in the net.

‘Is he interfering with play? I don't think so. We'd have to ask the officials why they disallowed it but we respect that decision. That's what they're there for and we move on.’

Round added: ‘We really wanted to keep the pressure on and try and qualify for Europe and now we can't do that. So it's a big disappointment to us, the dressing room was quite down afterwards.

‘There's a real resolve and a commitment in there to try and qualify for Europe and be successful in Europe. So there is a big disappointment - we needed to win but unfortunately we couldn't quite do it.’
