End of season burn-out?

Why do footballers struggle with energy levels at the end of a season in which they play, on average, less than two games per week? A 'day' of training simply doesn't compare to the hours worked by manual labourers up and down the country, many of whom still play Sunday league football every weekend. Do we need to change the number of fixtures, or just ask these professionals to man up a bit?
