My First Visit To Wembley Was Today 29 Years Ago...

For the Torquay United game.

Great day out but a disastrous result made it a very long journey home.

Thankfully, we more than made up for it the year after.

I was at that one too [|)]

But I returned to Wembley and the Millenium for all our other ones except the West Spam one which we lost.

Great times, hope they return.

Got home with the sun coming up on the Saturday morning. Genuinly wondered at the time if it would be the only time I would see my team at Wembley.

The old place certainly had an aura about it, even if not particularly imposing from outside.

Did we have about 13k down there that night with about 7k from Torquay?

Didn't big DB graze the corner flag post with his penalty kick? 😣

I was there to share the pain [cr]
We put it right vs Scunnie though...
My first trip to Wembley though was on a Blackpool Grammar bus trip to see the friendly against the Netherlands. Don Revie managing England and Cruyff running the show in a 2 nil win for the Dutch. We were rubbish! [8)]

Painful memories of that Torquay game are still vivid- the sheer shock of how wide that penalty was...the sinking feeling in my gut...feeling awful for poor DB. A few minutes earlier we'd been singing "walking in a Bamber wonderland", but I don't remember singing it after the penalty to cheer him up...

Before all that, our equalizer was hilarious- Eyres hits the bar, their guy swings a boot to clear the ball...and it hits his standing leg and goes in. We deserved it though- it was all our pressure that made him panic!

I remember the day quite vividly -we got on a coach from the Bloomfield Pub at approximately 6am and the drinking started. We probably got to Wembley about noon, we were the 1st coach there, 7 1/2 hours before kickoff 😃
Then it was off to The West End - we drank all day, getting back to Wembley approximately 6.45. For some reason we ended up at the Torquay turnstiles and as usual in those days we couldnít keep our mouths shut 😃 - eventually after several altercations with the away fans including one with the alleged bare knuckle champion of Devon we were ďpersuaded ď by the mounted police to move to the correct side of the stadium.
The game was a bit of a blur to be honest and the coach trip home was unpleasant - Iím sure some of you can relate to, 16 hours drinking, tired, dehydrated etc and then you start getting one of those headaches which feels like you have a unicorn growing on the top of your head 😃
I think I got home about 5am 👍

Have to admit, the year after when we beat Scunthorpe was one of the best sessions on the ale I've had in my time.

Set off from the NS WMC around 7am. Had a few on the way down there and arrived early afternoon. Think all 30 of us were pretty wasted by kick-off.

One of the group didn't make it. He was so drunk, he ended up losing his way, missing the game and slept on a bench at Sudbury train station. We had to leave him in London. He woke up the next day, had no money and had to hitch home. Think he got home on Sunday!
